Bran Castle, situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, is one of Romania’s most famous examples of medieval architecture. Despite its worldwide fame as “Dracula’s lair”, the true history of this place is far more complex and is closely linked not only to dark legends but also to the Romanian royal family.
The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1377, when King Louis I of Anjou of Hungary granted the inhabitants of Brașov permission to build a stone fortress on top of the cliff. The castle was of strategic importance: it served as a customs post and a powerful defensive outpost on the trade route linking Transylvania with the southern regions.
Over the centuries, Bran Castle passed from one owner to another, serving as a border fortress during the wars with the Ottoman Empire. Its architecture is a typical example of Transylvanian Gothic: narrow labyrinthine corridors, secret staircases and massive towers, set into the complex contours of the rock face.
Bran Castle’s reputation as “Dracula’s Castle” has become firmly established thanks to literature and cinema, although the historical facts tell a different story:
Nevertheless, it is Bran that has become a place of pilgrimage for lovers of Gothic aesthetics. Inside the castle today, there is a separate exhibition dedicated to the myth of Dracula and his historical prototype.
In 1920, the castle was given a new lease of life when Brasov City Council presented it to Queen Marie of Romania as a token of gratitude for her contribution to the unification of the country. The Queen transformed the austere fortress into a cosy summer residence, adding elements of traditional art, fireplaces and antique furniture to the interiors. It was under her reign that the castle acquired the “romantic” appearance we see today.
Today, Bran Castle is visited by more than 1 million tourists a year. It remains the perfect destination for those seeking a balance between authentic medieval history and the mystical atmosphere of literary legends.
