Tower Bridge:
a symbol of London spanning the Thames

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is perhaps the most recognisable bridge in the world, though it is often mistakenly referred to as “London Bridge”. In fact, London Bridge is located right next door and looks rather modest, whilst Tower Bridge is that very “fairytale” giant with its Gothic towers and blue suspension chains. Built in the late 19th century, it became a masterpiece of Victorian engineering, blending perfectly with the architecture of the neighbouring Tower of London.

The bridge’s main feature is its opening mechanism. Unlike ordinary bridges, this one lifts its massive wings (bascules) upwards, allowing large vessels to pass along the Thames. In the past, giant steam engines were used for this purpose; these can still be seen today in the original engine rooms inside the bridge. The process is now automated, but the opening of the bridge remains a spectacular sight, for which tourists and locals alike are happy to put their business on hold for a while.

For those seeking a thrill, there are glass walkways on the top level between the towers. Standing on the transparent floor 42 metres above the Thames is not for the faint-hearted: the famous red double-decker buses and boats, which look tiny from this height, rush past right beneath your feet. However, the views from here of the City and The Shard are considered to be among the best in the city.

In the evening, Tower Bridge is transformed by its dazzling illumination, which is reflected in the dark waters of the river. It is a place where the grandeur of ancient metal and stone meets the romance of the city at night. A stroll across it is an essential part of any London itinerary, allowing you to literally touch history that continues to live and breathe right at the heart of a modern metropolis.
